BAND SCHOLARSHIPS

- Complete the application for the Talent Scholarship Application.
The audition for a scholarship in band will consist of:
- A recording or live audition featuring the following:
- A few major and minor scales of your choice, and a chromatic scale. 2 octaves where possible. At least quarter note = 100bpm
- One or two complete or significant portions of quality selections that show both lyrical and articulate playing. These may be from solo works or excerpts from a band or orchestra composition. No pop or pep tunes please.
- The above requirements should demonstrate:
- Good tone
- Sense of rhythm and tempo
- Technique
- Overall musicianship
The student may audition in person. Contact Dr. Smith to schedule a time. If a recording is sent, be sure that it is clearly identified with the student’s name, instrument, address, and phone number. Also, please introduce your selections by identifying the composer and title of solos and excerpts.

University Orchestra Scholarships

- You may submit a recorded audition if distance prevents you from auditioning in person. To submit a recorded audition, send a 10-15 minutes video sample of your playing, using Google Drive or YouTube links. The video should include a major and melodic minor scale as well a solo piece reflecting quality tone, steady rhythm and tempo, and suitable level of technical ability. Submit to Dr. Paul Abegg paul.abegg@utahtech.edu by March 15.

STRINGS:

- Three-octave major and melodic minor scale in eighth notes; quarter note = 60 (2 octaves for basses).
- Two contrasting solo pieces demonstrating quality tone, rhythmic accuracy and technical proficiency.
- You may submit a recorded audition if distance prevents you from auditioning in person. To submit a recorded audition, send a 10-15 minutes sample of your playing, using Google Drive or YouTube links. Submit to Dr. Paul Abegg paul.abegg@utahtech.edu by March 15.
- To schedule a live audition contact Dr. Paul Abegg at paul.abegg@utahtech.edu. Live auditions are 10 minutes and take place in Eccles Fine Arts Center Rm 140. Memorization is encouraged. Accompaniment is not required.

HARP:
Audition Requirements: Two pieces in contrasting styles and/or tempi.
Choral & Vocal Scholarships
Primary Contact: Dr. Roger Hale at roger.hale@utahtech.edu.
The audition for a scholarship in choral and vocal music will consist of:

- The student’s performance of two songs in contrasting styles (for example, an Italian art song and a piece from a musical theater)
- Vocal exercises (vocal range)
- Sight singing
- Aural memory assessment
PERCUSSION SCHOLARSHIPS

The audition for percussion scholarships will consist of the following:
- Snare Drum etude
- A selection on keyboards: marimba, vibes, or xylophone
- An example of timpani performance
Percussion auditions should take place on the UT campus.
OR
A recording may be sent in lieu of the personal audition. It must contain the solo described above.
If a recording is sent, be sure that it is clearly identified with the student’s name, address and phone number. Also, please identify the composer and title of solos and excerpts.

Piano Scholarships

STEPS TO APPLY FOR A PIANO SCHOLARSHIP:
- Complete and submit the application for the Talent Scholarship Application (see the link below).
- Contact Dr. Nancy Allred to set up an audition time: Nancy.Allred@utahtech.edu
- Prepare audition repertoire (see piano requirements below).
- Perform piano scholarship audition either on campus (live audition) or send a video recording link of your performance.
- Live auditions will be held at Utah Tech University on February 7-8, 2025 and March 7-8, 2025.
- Schedule an audition time with Dr. Nancy Allred.
- Recorded auditions may submitted in lieu of the live audition:
- Send a video recording link (see requirements below) using Google Drive or YouTube links. Submit Dr. Nancy Allred by March 15th.
All scholarship applications, auditions, and recordings must be received by March 15th.
Piano scholarship audition requirements:
- Perform two memorized pieces from contrasting periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Twentieth/Twenty-first Century)
- Fluency in major and minor scales and arpeggios
- Sight read intermediate level literature (i.e., Clementi Sonatina)
