Utah Tech University Music Department

Percussion Studies

We are excited to see your interest in percussion at UT. There is a place for you in our studio!

The Percussion area at Utah Tech is an exciting program where percussionists excel and achieve their musical goals.

Central to percussion activities is the Percussion Ensemble. This is one of the finest chamber ensembles in the region. The literature performed ranges from early classical works from the advent of percussion ensemble through experimental and electronic pieces. In the past fifteen year the percussion area has commissioned fifteen different composers and premiered their works on campus and in the community.

Students take part in weekly performance classes and masterclass where assessments are shared to improve technical and musical abilities. Students perform as soloists in studio recitals each semester.

Students in the program are enrolled in the BA/BS in Music, the Bachelor of Music Education, and the Bachelor of Music- performance degrees. Many students from other degrees across campus participate in the musical ensembles as percussionists.

Graduates of the Percussion program regularly perform professionally at the Tuacahn Center for the Arts, Red Rock Dance Festival, DSU Dance Department, the North County Center for the Arts (New Hampshire), and St George Music Theater. DSU percussionists have also gone on to medical school, law school, and CPAs. Several percussion graduates are teaching in schools and private studio settings.

Six students have performed concerti with the University Orchestra or the Southwest Symphony in the last twelve years.  Students also perform in the Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, the Southwest Symphony, and -coming soon- the Marching Band. Additionally, students have presented their research at the Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research and the UT Undergraduate Research Symposium.
